Summer Cruises

Posted on: May 28 2013

I wanted to let you know about a very cool organization called Celebrating Seniors, which was co-founded by a former Armistead employee, Jeanne Comouche and our current Outreach Coordinator, Diane Way. Celebrating Seniors has a mission which is to create, coordinate and promote opportunities for seniors to come together for social community events and activities. They are holding several senior cruises this summer on Thursdays from 2-3:30pm. The cruise takes place on the Spirit of Ethan Allen and includes live music and dessert. Admission is only $16.99 per person. Here’s a list of them if you&rsquo...

Meet the Developer and Founder of CopingWithChange.org

Posted on: May 15 2013

I’m pleased to introduce you to a young woman, Adrianna Alpaugh. She is a recent Champlain College graduate, an Armistead caregiver and the developer of an interesting communication platform called CopingWithChangeVT.org. I’m turning the blog over to Adrianna so she can explain the communication tool she’s developed while at Champlain and because I want to help spread the word that CopingWithChange.org exists and is a good resource for families and caregivers. Introducing Adrianna… Throughout the past seven or eight years, I have developed a passion for helping senior citizens maintain...

“4 Your Can-venience”

Posted on: May 05 2013

Did you know that the folks at Armistead have started a company wide food drive called 4 Your Can-venience? I think it’s really cool. The goal is to raise a ton of food by the end of the year. In Vermont, the branch is dropping off sturdy, blue Armistead bags in different South Burlington neighborhoods. The idea is that you fill the bag up with non-perishable items for the Armistead team to pick up on a designated date. The food is then distributed to local non-profits that serve seniors. Several businesses have joined in on the effort, including...

National Healthcare Awareness Day

Posted on: April 15 2013

As a newly 36 year old, I’m still at the age where I feel fairly invincible.  It’s hard to imagine that chaos might catch up to me.  But I’ve worked in the care field long enough to know that health issues and emergencies happen and often without warning.  This is why my husband and I have advanced directives which clearly state our health care wishes should either one of us not be able to voice them.   Although I have a good relationship with my mother, am her POA for health...

Federal Patient Self-Determination Act

Posted on: April 01 2013

I’m in the process of deciding on whether or not to become a guardian for a senior who is not able to care for himself or herself.  In the process I’ve learned about the Federal Patient Self-Determination Act (PSDA), passed by Congress in 1990.   The PSDA requires that patients have the right to facilitate their own health care decisions, have the right to accept or refuse medical and dental treatment and have the right to make an advance health care directive.  The act also states that facilities must ask a patient whether or...

Posted on: April 01 2013

Have you thought about planning for your healthcare choices in the event that you’re not able to speak and or advocate for yourself?  Have your family members? Well, if you haven’t or don’t know where to start, April is your month.  April kicks of the National Healthcare Decision month and more specifically, April 16th is the National Healthcare Decision Day (NHDD).  The movement, started by the non-profit, NHDD, aims to “inspire, educate and empower the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning.   This month I...

MS WEEK

Posted on: March 12 2013

Do you remember Laura Palasciano?  She was the young woman who submitted a blog post recently regarding her experience living with MS?  I was so impressed with her honesty and writing that I asked her for a sit down interview so I could meet her and learn more about her life.  I wanted to feature Laura this week since it is MS Awareness week.   Lara’s “D” day was 1/15/10.  But it was a long journey to figure out a diagnosis.  Her first symptom happened on 10/18/08, 2 days before she started her...
