Mayors Raise Awareness

Posted on: March 11 2013

The Annual March for Meals campaign has been raising awareness about senior hunger for over a decade.  One way they do this is by asking area Mayors to deliver meals one day during March.  This is a fun way to get local officials involved.  In Vermont, mayors around the state will be delivering meals on March 20th, to raise awareness about the many seniors who live with food insecurity.  Here are some pictures of past campaigns.  I’ll try to post pictures from the upcoming Mayors for Meals campaign as soon as I...

Nationally over 8.3 million seniors face hunger each day. You can help go to cvaa.org and take the pledge. This campaign is designed to bring attention to the problem of senior hunger. Posted on: March 04 2013

It’s March for Meals Month and this month we will be focusing on this campaign and senior hunger.   In 2002, The Meals on Wheels Association of American created the campaign, March for Meals, as a way to highlight senior hunger.  The goal was to raise awareness by connecting local businesses and public officials with area senior nutrition programs.   I encourage you to find out about your local Meals on Wheels program during March.  Area Meals on Wheels programs are always looking for volunteers to deliver.  Donations are also always appreciated.   In my...

Posted on: February 25 2013

This week I am devoting the blog to Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a chronic disease that attacks the central nervous system.  This is an unpredictable disease and progress, symptoms, and severity vary for those affected.  MS occurs when the immune system attacks the central nervous system.  The National Multiple Sclerosis society says that it is thought that MS is triggered in a genetically susceptible individual by a combination of environmental factors.  Some scientists believe it is an autoimmune disease while others disagree because the specific target of the attack in MS has not yet been identified. ...

A “Heart Stopping” Story…...

Posted on: February 18 2013

October 27, 2009 was a fairly normal day for 38 year old Michelle Johnston until the evening came. Michelle was on her way home from a normal shopping trip and arrived at her house and began carrying the groceries in. She did not make it through the garage as unexpectedly Michelle collapsed, her heart stopped beating and she died from Sudden Cardiac Death.  Luckily for Michelle, her husband Andrew and daughter Sydney arrived home at the same time from a different outing and Andrew immediately called 911 and began administering CPR within two minutes of Michelle's collapse.  Andrew continued CPR...

GO RED FOR WOMEN

Posted on: February 11 2013

Guess what the number one killer of women is. Nope, not breast cancer. The number one killer of women is heart disease, which takes the life of 1 in 3 women each year.  Women are dying at the rate of one per minute from heart disease.  I found this statistic staggering and devastating which is why I’m turning this week’s blog over to the American Heart Association.  I hope you will educate yourself about heart disease and ways to prevent it. Also, if you live in Vermont, join the Vermont chapter of the American...
