April is National Volunteer Month-Spotlight on Larry

Posted on: April 15 2016

Larry Pillsbury is another Armistead Senior Care employee and volunteer extraordinaire. For 8 years, Larry has been involved with the Williston Community Food Shelf. He is a founding member and on the Board of Directors. When Larry is not working for Armistead, he is either at the Food Shelf during its open hours, 3 days a week, or transporting donations. Larry gathers and loads the food from the Williston Hannaford Supermarket into his own vehicle. Hannaford generously donates meat, bread products, deli meats and cheeses, and baked goods which can total five to six thousand pounds a month! Larry also picks...

April is National Volunteer Month-Spotlight on Barb

Posted on: April 08 2016

When I arrived to my first day at the Armistead Senior Care office, there was a beautiful bouquet of flowers waiting on my desk. It was a lovely gesture by my co-workers and it certainly made me feel both special and welcomed. As the week went on and I was focused on work, my bouquet suffered from a lack of attention on my part. This was unfortunate because my work area is what you see first when entering our office. One of our Caregiver’s walked into the office, took one look at my bouquet and immediately made...

Thank You Alzheimer’s Association

Posted on: March 31 2016

Yesterday was the Alzheimer’s Awareness and Advocacy Day at the Vermont State House in Montpelier. As the daughter and former full-time caregiver to a parent with dementia, I would like to salute the efforts of the Vermont chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association for their work in putting together the Alzheimer’s Awareness and Advocacy Day at the Vermont State House. The Alzheimer's Association has been a resource of mine ever since my father was diagnosed with dementia. At the beginning, I mostly read about the basics: what is dementia, what are...

Yoga for Seniors – What to Know Before You Start

Posted on: March 24 2016

from About Health website One of the great things about yoga is that it is so adaptable to different populations with diverse physical abilities and needs. Though the popular image of yoga may be a young person twisted up like a pretzel with apparent ease, those who are older and less flexible can enjoy a yoga practice just as much and potentially benefit from it even more. Is Yoga Appropriate for Seniors? In most cases, seniors can absolutely do yoga. Many people with hectic schedules only find the time for activities like yoga in retirement. Though the tendency is...

Does poor sleep raise risk for Alzheimer’s disease?

Posted on: March 16 2016

With Daylight Savings Time beginning this last weekend, the thought of more daylight makes me very happy. The thought of losing an hour of precious sleep didn’t make me so happy. It can be very interesting to observe how the biannual time change affects us, our children, our pets, and our aging loved ones. My father has dementia and for two and a half years, I was his primary caregiver. Dementia has been present on the paternal side of my family for at least two generations that I know of. Seeing the disease progress in my father...

Top 10 Financial Scams Targeting Seniors

Posted on: February 29 2016

from NCOA National Council on Aging Financial scams targeting seniors have become so prevalent that they’re now considered “the crime of the 21st century.” Why? Because seniors are thought to have a significant amount of money sitting in their accounts. Financial scams also often go unreported or can be difficult to prosecute, so they’re considered a “low-risk” crime. However, they’re devastating to many older adults and can leave them in a very vulnerable position with little time to recoup their losses. It’s not just wealthy seniors...

The Boomer’s Roadmap for Aging in Place: How to Prepare Today for your Senior Years

Posted on: February 08 2016

from Marie Villeza, Elderimpact Aging in place is an attractive option for many baby boomers and retirees who value independence and living life on their own terms. This lifestyle choice is a commitment to remaining in the home that you know and love, rather than relocating to a retirement community or assisted living facility. Establishing an aging in place plan denotes taking responsibility for your quality of life without being a burden on your family or community. Now is the time to start planning for your senior years and making small changes a little bit at a time. Trying...
