Staying Cool and Safe in a Heat Wave
Posted on: 2013 07 15
The weatherman on WCAX Channel 3 News says that we are in for a possible heat wave this week. A heat wave means we can expect temperatures to be in the 90’s for the next three or more days. At my house we only have fans to keep cool. I make sure to blow in nice, cool morning air and then draw all the shades closed to keep my upstairs cool and dark. This makes for a more bearable day if we need to be upstairs. Since I have young children, I also stock up on popsicles and insist they drink water throughout the day. If you are a senior or in poor health, hot weather can be especially dangerous. Here are some useful tips from the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/features/extremeheat/) to stay cool during a heat wave. • Stay in an air-conditioned indoor location as much as possible. • Drink plenty of fluids even if you don’t feel thirsty. • Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen. • Schedule outdoor activities carefully. • Pace yourself. • Take cool showers or baths to cool down. • Check on a friend or neighbor and have someone do the same for you. • Do not leave children or pets in cars. • Check the local news for health and safety updates. Stay safe. I’m heading upstairs to give my youngest a cool bath before naptime!
